The Web We’re Born to Weave

June 15, 2024

Do you know who you are? Do you know what you’re made of?

These were questions my good friend and mentor, Barb Patterson, asked of me 4 days ago in a program I was doing with her. The answer is different today than it was 4 days ago. It’s different than it was 2 months ago and different again a year ago and so it goes on. How would you answer that question? Do you think you are your personality or your thought-created version of yourself? Do you think you are your past? Maybe you are the labels you identify with? Or do you see something deeper?

Can you see that you’re made of the same creative energy that fuels life itself? We’re not any of the things we think we are. I love seeing the truth of that and I can never get to the end of seeing. I am reminded again and again that there is always more to see.

Like many other times in my life, but really poignantly this past couple of months, life has shown me that who I am is infinite potential in a human body. With all the rebuilding needed at The Insight Alliance, in the past  I would have said I’m out of my depth, thrown in the deep end initially wondering if I could swim. Turns out I’m a pretty good swimmer. I’m not saying that because I think I’m special, I’m saying that because we’re ALL special.

We’ve all been thrown in the deep end at different times in our life, wondering whether we can make it to the other side or even stay afloat. Only to realize we’re better swimmers than we thought. Something comes to our aid, gives us a nudge or a fresh idea about what to do next. There’s an energy behind life that gets us out of bed, shows up as wisdom and reminds us we’re going to be ok and to keep going. Are we personally keeping ourselves alive every moment or is there something deeper at play? Life is living us.

As the acorn has the design of the oak tree already in the seed, the caterpillar has the design of the butterfly born into it. I’m not sure the caterpillar would have any part of becoming a butterfly if it knew what was going to be involved! It turns to liquid in the chrysalis and goodness knows what else to become the beautiful creature it’s born to be, but it’s just its nature. We too, are made of this same intelligent energy as everything else on earth. WE are nature. We have our potential designed into us, like everything else on earth. We are not different and no one is left out.

There was something that really hit me when Barb talked about a spider. A spider doesn’t have a switch that shoots the web right out of it. No, the thread is created in the spider, emerging slowly as it builds its web. It’s like it’s co-creating with the SOURCE and a thread emerges as it goes. So much thread! It’s actually bigger than the spider. It’s born to create a web. It’s how it’s designed. All the spider has to do is follow its inbuilt natural intelligence to know what to do.

As humans, we often don’t see we are part of this same system. This same source is our supply for everything we do and its nature is to be abundant, to be diverse, to be limitless, and to be creative. As humans, we can doubt ourselves. Thoughts of lack, of worry, of doubting our ability and thinking we can’t get through something or find the solution to a problem. Here’s the good news... we can - always. And we do it EVERY day.

We’re like a hose with the water flowing through it. It’s a continual source, but it’s like we put our foot on the hose and wonder what happened. We get stuck and think we can’t make it or get through it. We may even think we’re broken, but at any moment we can take our foot off the hose and we’re in the flow again. This source is in every one of us and we’re always co-creating with it, just like the spider.

I know I’m no different from anyone else. I’m made of the same stardust as you are. With the same potential for aliveness, for beauty, and for love.

If you would have told me what I needed to achieve these past couple months, I would have thought you’re having a laugh; There’s no way, but without too much thinking and following internal nudges and making decisions, I’ve been bold in asking for help where I need it, listening deeply to my wisdom and to the wisdom of others. Being drawn into the present moment. Co-creating with our amazing team that has risen to the occasion and we’re making it work.

I’m seeing so clearly the creative source in all of us. I have my off days where it all feels like too much, but I know that’s what the mind does when my mood is low - it spits out doubtful thoughts, questioning all of it. I’ve learned not to listen to the shitty committee that loves to come alive at 3am. I know it’s just the static and my conditioned thinking that means nothing to me 95% of the time and in the 5% when it all feels real and too much, I know to give myself some grace and wait it out. Eventually, I’ll take my foot off the hose and life flows once again.

Here’s to your unique expression of the life force coursing through you.
